My name is Hatty, and, appropriately, I make hats. If you have ever cycled in London, with nothing on your head, these are for you. Antelm Hats are fashionable and foldable, with internal layers of discreet protection.
How did you start your business?
I gave myself a year to research and create a product that solved the head-protection gap for city cyclists. Few people wear helmets on rented bikes because they’re bulky or unappealing.
How did you choose the name of your business?
Antelm is an Old English word meaning “zealous protection.” The theme of the ant, small yet mighty, was also central, and it became the inspiration for our logo.
What or who inspires your products?
I’m inspired by my energetic, active friends who live life on the go. I believe protection shouldn’t be sacrificed for practicality, and I want to design products that let people live busy, varied, and interesting lives with confidence.
What does a typical day look like?
No two days are ever the same. One day might be full of cold calls and admin, another spent designing, shooting product photos, or editing videos. It’s always varied, always busy.
What do you enjoy most about the creative process?
I love researching trends, playing with design ideas, and experimenting until something new takes shape. The technical side was exciting too, because the product is so unique, I had to carve out a path forward from scratch, based on absolute requirements.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a small business owner?
Finding high-quality manufacturers who could meet a wide range of practical needs was a huge challenge. In the end, production had to be split between the external fashion design and the internal protective layers.
What is your hero product or one that means the most to you and why?
The striped hats! Stripes are timeless, cheerful, and universally loved, they embody the idea that protection can be both stylish and fun.
What tip (or tips) would you give anyone looking to start a small creative business?
Just start. Don’t wait for perfection, it’s better to build something and improve it step by step. Do your research, make a list of essentials, and commit to ticking things off daily. Momentum is everything.
