I’m Jane, founder of The Hampshire Seed Company — a boutique seed house specialising in cut-flower seeds, bulbs, and tubers for gardeners and flower farmers.
How did you start your business?
After years as a florist, frustrated by the lack of unique, high-quality cut-flower seeds. What began as a few packets for my own plot has grown into a boutique seed house serving gardeners and flower farmers nationwide.
How did you choose the name of your business?
I wanted a name rooted in place and heritage. The Hampshire Seed Company reflects both where I grow and my aim to create a trusted, traditional seed house with a modern outlook.
What or who inspires your products?
I’m inspired by the rhythm of the seasons, the beauty of the British countryside, and heirloom flowers that bring tradition and artistry into modern gardens.
What does a typical day look like?
My days shift with the seasons — sowing, harvesting, packing seeds, or planning new collections — but flowers are always at the centre.
What do you enjoy most about the creative process?
I love the transformation — from tiny seeds to armfuls of blooms. The creative process is about colour, texture, and seasonality, but also the joy of seeing something you’ve nurtured by hand come to life and inspire others.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a small business owner?
Balancing growth with staying true to my values — learning to scale sustainably while keeping customers at the heart of the business.
What is your hero product or one that means the most to you and why?
My exclusive seed collections are my hero products. I chose them with a designer’s eye and a florist’s knowledge, not knowing if they’d resonate. To see them thriving — and customers loving them as much as I do — has been a real highlight of my business.
What tip (or tips) would you give anyone looking to start a small creative business?
Start with the basics: know your costs, your customers, and your why. Passion will get you going, but numbers and planning will keep you going. Don’t try to do everything at once — focus on what matters most and let your business grow with you.
